In 1998, the movie The Titanic was released and immediately people all around the world were captivated by the over the top elegance. People were enthralled by the flawless chandeliers hanging from the ceiling of the “unsinkable ship”, the champagne and caviar, and the treasured jewels from the wealthy titanic passengers that were swallowed by the dark sea.
There were many accounts of jewels that were reported to have been boarded on the Titanic. These accounts were supported by the newspapers that reported that “there a small fortune in diamonds aboard the Titanic. However the facts of the story are that the artefacts recovered from the Titanic included: 2 rings-one with 60 diamonds and a breath-taking sapphire and diamond ring. Other treasures found were an exquisite 3 stone diamond ring and a bracelet with the name “Amy” spelled out in gemstones.
When it comes to the famous “Heart of the Ocean” that Rose was given by her dotting fiancé, there is no record of this necklace to have been on the Titanic and therefore it was added by the director of the movie for an added elegance to the story. However the movie did inspire Jewelers Asprey & Garrand to make a real heart of the ocean diamond necklace resulting in a 170 carat heart shaped sapphire with 65 diamonds, each 30 carats. Celine Dion wore this necklace at the Oscar ceremony as she sang “My Heart Will Go On”-the theme song, during the 1998 ceremony. It was later sold at a benefit auction for 2.2 million.
