7.2 Scale Earthquake Attachs Turkey Today

The USGS has reported on October 23, 2011 at 1:41 pm local time a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that has rocked south eastern Turkey. The earthquake was located 16 km north-north-east of Van, Turkey at a depth of 20 km. Massive wide spread damage and hundreds of deaths have been reported.

As many as 1,000 people were feared killed Sunday when a powerful earthquake struck Turkey, collapsing dozens of buildings and pulling down phone and power lines in the southeast of the country, officials and witnesses said.

Emergency workers battled to rescue people trapped in buildings in the city of Van and surrounding districts on the banks of Lake Van, near Turkey's border with Iran.

A magnitude 6 earthquake has struck Turkey at 4:32 a.m. The earthquake killed 57 people as it knocked down stone or mud brick houses, the earthquake passed through six villages. About 100 ther people were injured in affect of the earthquake, the quake struck 550 kilometers east of the capital city Ankara. The quake which struck at at 4:32 caught many people a they were asleep, it was followed by 30 aftershocks.

Turkey and Turkish Cypriots Sign Oil and Gas Exploration Deal

Turkish state media say Ankara and the Turkish Cypriots of breakaway northern Cyprus have signed an agreement to explore for oil and gas in the eastern Mediterranean.
The reports say Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Dervis Eroglu, signed the deal Wednesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York.
The deal, which was opposed by the European Union, came in response to a similar move earlier this week by the internationally recognized Greek Cypriots. Cypriot energy chief Solon Kassinis announced Monday that U.S. firm Noble Energy had started drilling inside Cyprus' exclusive economic zone south of the island, close to Israeli waters. Cyprus has commissioned Noble Energy for the project, which has been operating in the area off Israel's coast since 1998.
