American Music Awards 2012

Rihanna and Nicki Minaj are the leading nominees at the 40th annual American Music Awards with four nods each.

 

Christina Aguilera announced the nominations Tuesday in Los Angeles. She also said she plans to perform at the ceremony next month.

Drake, Justin Bieber, Maroon 5, One Direction and Usher earned three bids apiece. Carrie Underwood, Chris Brown, fun., Gotye, J. Cole, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Luke Bryan, and Pitbull are each double nominees.

Drake, Bieber, Maroon 5, Katy Perry and Rihanna are also in the running for artist of the year.

Nominees are selected based on broadcast airplay and online popularity. Fans can vote online for their favorites in all 20 categories.

The American Music Awards will be presented Nov. 18 at Nokia Theater and broadcast live on ABC.

invitation to an event disseminated on October 23 in San Jose, California. Still, many series of interesting things that have been associated with the iPad Mini, like 13 rumors compiled by Mashable, Monday (22/10/2012).

1. The screen size of 7.85 inches: Measuring 7.85, screen iPad Mini will be 2 inches smaller than the current iPad. But size is considered larger than most current small-screen tablet that is 7 inches.

2. Name tablet is likely to iPad Mini or iPad Water: Source of the calling indutsri small tablet Apple as "iPad Mini" for months. But Apple will likely change, and could have chosen the name "iPad Air".

3. Screen resolution 1024 x 786: Resolution iPad Mini likely to be similar to the first iPad and iPad 2, with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

6. Lightning Connector: Mini iPad will reportedly have a dock connector as the iPhone 5 Lightning, which is 80 percent smaller than the 30-pin connector.

My Thoughts: After her chart-topping first single from the upcoming album, Red, Taylor Swift has again enchanted us with the second track from said album in this song that seems to retreat to her country roots. When I first listened to it, I was unimpressed by, what seemed, a copy-cat plot. On the surface, it comes across no different than Swift’s usual writing and in many platforms it is. Multiple plays since has changed my mind – this song is so much better than ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.’ For the first time in a long time, a Swift song tells a compelling story of new love that paints the hero as a gentleman (the sort of guy the fairer sex often thinks makes them look weak! What-ever!). In novels, songwriting or film, no matter the media, it is hard to find a guy who fits that description – when we do, it’s usually after a “search,” so I do applaud Taylor for giving us a guy who stands when she enters the room or pulls out his date’s chair as Taylor replies, and you don't know how nice that is.

My Thoughts: although “Good Girl” has a ring of familiarity to it, it does not diminish how awesome this track is – seriously. Each time I listen to it, I like it more. (I’ve probably listened to it half-a-dozen times since its release Thursday!) As early reviews have claimed, Carrie nails this song – yet again. In much the tradition of her prior tracks, I don’t feel like we are being asked to listen to a song that has been sung time and again only with different titles and words (example being “Cowboy Casanova”) but rather another destined-to-become-number-one-single from an artist who is multi-talented.

The message of the song itself has a good-bad vibe going for it. On the one hand, it is encouraging girls to stay away from guys that are “bad news” but on the other hand, in getting there, some of the lines aren’t always above criticism.

From what little I know of the SyFy channel, it is known for its creative – or wacky! – productions. Inspired by one of their more recent miniseries, Alice I decided this was worth a look. Once again, a fantasy lovers dream is nurtured in this crazy six-hour series (or four-and-a-half hours courtesy of the DVD).

Adventure is something that Dorothy Gail (Zooey Deschnel) – or DG, as she is commonly known, is ready to allow for in her life. In fact, she craves something more than the dusty town she has known since childhood. Her life isn’t dreadful but it is far from fulfilling her curious personality. Living with her beloved parents’ on their little farm, her days consist of waitressing and getting caught for speeding on her motorbike. Tired of the fines, she dreams of taking off to fulfill her grand notions. Her mother (Gwynyth Walsh) is worried for DG but it is her father (Kevin McNulty) who seems to understand her best. The two are most suited. It is he who shares some of life’s most valuable lessons no matter how tiring they can be, and whom DG confides most in about the nightmares; one of bears, apples and a woman who is warning DG of a storm. During an unexplained tornado, their home is invaded by cloaked men with guns; the three barely escape with their lives and DG is separated from her parents. Waking up in a forest puzzles DG as do the small dwarf men who suddenly surround her accusing her of being a spy for the “witch.” Captured by these funny little men, DG is met with another surprise when she befriends fellow prisoner Glitch (Alan Cumming), a funny man with half a brain, who still keeps his wits about him. Escaping when the longcoats come searching, DG and Glitch set out for the central road to make it to The Outer Zone, where answers may exist… but DG soon realizes that the witch Azkadellia (Kathleen Robertson) is actively searching for her capture…

Book ::Winning Balance:: Shawn Johnson

My Thoughts: There probably are not many of us who have not heard of the pint-sized, gold-medal-winning gymnast who won over the heart of America at the 2008 Olympic Games. If her name is not familiar from the sport that she excels at, then you probably “met” her on the eighth season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars (which she also won). This book is a journal of sorts that she has written for her fans about her life so far – her growth in maturity and her faith; the lessons life has taught her and getting back to the place where she is more happy – and healthy. It is rare that I read books in which the celebrity name emblazoned on the front shares their life’s story. My tastes seem more suited to fiction but I do not regret having read this book in the least. Not knowing much about Shawn’s private life so much as her professional one (even that is limited), I enjoyed getting to “know” her as a person and not a mere celebrated figure who’s spotlight was made bright by her appearance at the Olympics – and subsequently her gold-medal win. If you’ve followed this athlete, I’d wager that in reading this, you will learn a lot of things about Shawn you didn’t know. Some that may even surprise you.

Perhaps the most insightful parts of this book are Shawn’s profession about her family’s faith – their belief in God but infrequent church attendance. Biblically, we are told that Christianity is a hard maintain without gathering with others at Sunday services but I don’t believe that someone cannot have a genuine relationship with Christ if they don’t attend church. Within these pages, Shawn shares about her growing faith in a heartfelt way that makes the reader believe she enjoys nothing less than a daily walk with Him. Raised with the “basic” knowledge of Christianity (she writes about her parents being strong Christians), it wasn’t until she was a teen that Shawn began to crave knowing her Savior more than as just the God she was taught was the Creator – she wanted to actually know Him. I found this a really hard read to get “into.” I was impressed with its easy writing style – Shawn is in fact, a poet (the style was simple with favorite quotes opening each chapter and 'lessons learned' to close) but it seemed I had to push myself to read more than a chapter or two at a time. That first 70-some pages were such a challenge because much of its focus is in gymnasts terms – the techniques they use and what makes a perfect performance – and although everything is explained, I found myself more confused than not. Given that, I was surprised that the last third of the novel went so quickly – before I knew it, I had basically read the rest of the book in one afternoon. And let me tell you, I enjoyed every minute of it.

The Hunger Games – Review

Every now and then, it’s nice to pick up a book that’s easy to read. The pages are crispy and white; the words are set in a large, clear font, and the story unravels in a direct first-person narrative. It’s also nice to pick up a book that you can’t bear to put down. The Hunger Games has all of these elements. It is YA at its best – a riveting, fast-paced story with intriguing characters, loads of action, and a love triangle that will have all the girls swooning, Twilight style. I will call it now – by this time next year, Edward and Jacob will be well and truly out, and it will be ‘Team Peeta’ or ‘Team Gale’ all the way. I devoured this book in two nights, and wished that I didn’t have to work or sleep so that I could finish it sooner.

::Adventure in an Apocalyptic World:: The Hunger Games

Reading this novel was… interesting. I read it not for a multitude of reasons but one: Simply put, I was darn curious about it. To give a bit of background on my exposure to The Hunger Games before news of the big-screen adaptation broke (dare I say this…), I had never heard of this trilogy. Shocking, I know. Anyway, after all of the buzz surrounding the series seemed to capture my attention, I asked Danielle if she would be willing to write a review on the book for my blog, and she graciously accepted. After that, I couldn’t hold out any longer and succumb to my curiosity. The book both entertained me and also annoyed me as a reader.

Since I have a review already posted here, I have decided to write more about what I hope is left intact in the movie. (Only be warned: This is a looong "review.")

The Story: Collin’s popular teen saga revolves around an annual tradition in a tyrant world in which the “Capitol” punishes each of its surrounding 12 districts because of a long-ago rebellion. The punishment is to take away residents children by holding an “event” that picks one boy and one girl minor from each district that then pits the 24 contestants against each other in a battle that could either result in fame and fortune – or death.

My Thoughts: I’ll just admit it. I read this for one reason and one reason only. Because of its popularity, I saw the book everywhere and as a result I succumbed to curiosity. There probably isn’t one person (well, maybe that is exaggerating a bit) who has not already read this book and is counting down the hours (or minutes, perhaps) until the major motion picture releases in a couple of weeks. In all honestly, I did not particularly love the book. My initial reaction was that the premise was a bit… primitive. The idea that young minds are asked to kill one another simply for the sport of their political leaders is troubling. With that being said, I am definitely not against fighting when it comes to protecting freedoms or self-defense. Fortunately, I was able to still like its main protagonists, Katniss and Peeta, not only because they were forced into a ritual they did not want but because their only “kills” were either for survival or unintentional.

The book is written in the first person, which admittedly I am not all that fond of. It seems to stifle so much about the book. For starters it only allows the reader into the thought process of one person and I find that a bit uninteresting, and it seems to be more difficult for me as the reader to really get “into” the story. Getting other characters perspective is just one of the things I am most anticipating about the movie. Below I am listing what I hope the movie adaptation strengthens...
